Development News & Questions

“You want competition within your business community,” Superior Douglas County Chamber President Dave Minor said. ALDI, a supermarket discount chain, has stores all over the globe, and now, the company is planting its roots in Superior. This story was reported by Explore Superior on Dec. 3rd, and more details were revealed on Fox 21 News yesterday in an interview with Minor (shown below.)

In the video the Chamber president says, “It’s just one more example of outside companies taking a look at the development happening in our community.” The 18,000-square foot grocery store will be built on a plot of land on Tower Avenue in front of Menards, offering residents reduced-priced groceries. “It’s just an option for people who maybe want to save or don’t have as many options available to them,” said Minor. “It’s just something that they can look at.”

This is no doubt a great opportunity for Superior as we work towards encouraging more development all over our City, especially along the Tower Avenue corridor. We also give Dave Minor a tip-of-the-hat as our local business spokesman and a key link to promoting development in our community. Nonetheless, it is noteworthy that the Superior ALDI’s (billed as a discount grocery store) is coupled with one in Duluth, and the video clip goes on to discuss multiple other developments in Duluth.

While we certainly applaud ALDI’s for locating themselves in Superior, we should also encourage development of businesses that lean more to the upscale end of commerce. A development similar to the one near UMD, where Tavern on the Hill opened recently, would be wonderful for Superior. We believe that the former Super One space in Belknap Plaza would be a wonderful location for an upscale grocery store to compliment the liquor and wine shop next door. While the various dollar stores in town have their niche, don’t we deserve high-end too?

So, here’s the question…can we compete with our big brother across the bay? What does Superior need to do to attract more developers to our fair city? Or…are there developments in the works that we haven’t heard about yet? If you know of such behind the scenes plans, please contact us HERE with details.

Many developers are reluctant to reveal their plans until they are ready to break ground. Seems to us at Explore Superior that we need to break through that fear and encourage an open conversation about development in our own backyard. Well planned development means more jobs, better tax base, and a lifestyle conducive to keeping our young people close to home. It’s time to demand more (and then we MUST support those businesses.) We also need to shop local as much as possible by supporting our hometown entrepreneurs.

We currently have a poll on the Home page of this website asking your opinion about the prospects of a new hotel being built near the Bong Center, overlooking the bay and Barker’s Island. After watching the video below, please go to our HOME page and vote in this poll…we value your opinion!

Belknap Plaza needs an upscale super market. How about Lund’s, Byerly’s, Country Market, or even Trader Joe’s? Any of them would complement the liquor store. At the Belknap they will gift wrap your holiday purchases. Congrats for landing ALDI. Now let’s get a grocery store for the Belknap Plaza!
