Attendance Huge – Vehicles Bigger!

By Nicky Wilson

Mighty Machines was a very fun and successful event this year. This year we had over 900 people in attendance and show-cased nearly thirty vehicles for families to explore. New this year was the Barko 612 Forwarder, brought in by Barko Hydraulics and Kivi Brothers Trucking, as well as a race car and tractor.

Additionally, we had vehicles from companies such as Lake City Towing, SAHA, Enbridge, and Bullyan RV. Jeff Foster Trucking, also graciously stepped up at the last minute to replace a cancelled vehicle.

We were also pleased to have the US National Guard, US Coast Guard, Head Start, City of Superior Street Department, Fire Department, and Police Department, Gold Cross, and other community partners join us with vehicles and demonstrations of robots, lights, sirens, and more.

Douglas County 4-H sold yummy treats such as caramel and cheese popcorn donated by Sweden Sweets, and set up stations with simple machines.

This year’s simple machines included rocket launchers, gears, and other activities that the children loved. Also new this year was the addition of vendors, which allowed our families to shop and play, as well as learn about services offered by our community partners.

The addition of vendors allowed the Family Resource Center raise $460 to put towards programming and field trips for the upcoming school year.

On September 6-8, the FRC hosted an open house daily from 9-3. Our new classroom is located inside Northern Lights Elementary in room C115.

The classroom is a bright open space for families to play, explore, and learn together. Several Open Play options are available throughout the year, as well as opportunities to hear guest speakers, take field trips, and more.

Classes began at the Family Resource Center on September 12. Class information is available on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/nlfrc.
