On the first Tuesday of April each year new School Board members are elected in the School District of Superior.  Once elected all Board members take the Oath of Office then official begin serving at the first Board meeting in May.  May 4th was the first day of work!

April of 2015 brought four members to the full Board.  Two are returning and two are new.  Len Albrecht began his tenure on the Board in 2000.  He has served as Board President for 8 of those years.  Rob Morehouse is also returning to the Board.  He has already served a three year term and is ready to continue to serve.  Both have demonstrated their dedication to fulfilling the Mission, Vision and Goals of the Superior District.

Our two new members are Craig Peterson and Michael Raunio.  Craig served on the Superior School Board from 1978-1982 and has decided to come back to serve again.  Mike is new to a School Board, but is a lifetime resident of Superior.  Welcome aboard all!

Perhaps you might be interested in running for School Board in the future? The process to get on the ballot to become a Board member is easier than you might think. Candidates for school board are required to file a few forms with the District Clerk.  The clerk for the Superior School District is Joan Parenteau.  The forms are a declaration of candidacy, a campaign finance registration statement and nomination papers.

Some other criteria to qualify for placement on the ballot as a candidate in a school board election are:

  • A citizen of the United States and
  • 18 years of age or older and
  • An eligible elector of the school district and
  • A resident of the school district for at least 28 consecutive days at the time of filing a declaration of candidacy and
  • obtain at least 20 signatures but not more than 100 of support for their candidacy

The real challenge is actually serving on the School Board. While it can be very rewarding, all 7 Board members must work collaboratively to make very difficult decisions.  Some highlights Board members are responsible for overseeing are setting policy and fiduciary issues. The Board sets policies for the district to operate under.

Policies are the ‘rules’ or ‘expectations’ for staff and students as well as for the operations of our district.  The Board also must make financial decisions from the amount of staff members to the capital projects…always being fiscally responsible to the taxpayers.

Here are the remaining three members of the Superior Board of Education.

School Board membership can also be rewarding!  Seeing student success stories, passing out diplomas at graduation, and constructing our NBC Spartan Sports just to name a few.  Board members can be proud of being a part of helping to support our youth to become successful citizens.

A great way to get involved in understanding the happenings of the Superior School District and to see the work of the Board is to attend our monthly Board meetings.  The agendas, dates and times of meetings can be found on our website www.superior.k12.wi.us or by clicking here.
