Warren Bender, member of Superior Rotary Club 40 forwarded these photos to us as he and other Rotary members from the Superior Club and the district began work on a new secondary school. This is a Rotary World Service Project (WSP), and is the genesis of several regional Rotary Clubs.
The school being built will be located in La Curvina, Guatemala, and is being constructed thanks to the help of volunteers such as Bender and other Rotarians. We’ve asked Bender to keep us updated as this work continues.
They are building a multi-purpose room and sports court at the La Curvina School in Monterrico, Guatemala. The Rotarians also provided the local population with over 450 toothbrushes and toothpaste tubes, a portion of which were donated by Presque Isle Rotarian and dentist, Dr. Donald Cassidy.
Warren Bender just returned from his 9 day stint in Guatemala. He made a presentation at a conference while there regarding the many Rotary District 5580 International projects dating back to 2004.
Following the Conference, Warren and other volunteers toured the Lake Atitlan area and stayed with Fireman Paul who has a small resort in Santiago. Paul is well known for working with volunteer firefighters in that area. He is known as Paul Bombero (fireman).
The group then toured Monterrico and schools at La Curvina, El Cebollito, El Dormido, and Hawaii. La Curvina directora and volunteer Diana and Warren toured Las Lisas. Being an educator himself, Warren throughly enjoyed an opportunity to have lunch with the director of education of the department of Santa Rosa don Arcenio and the governor of Santa Rosa.
