UW-Superior Students, Instructor to Present

Two University of Wisconsin-Superior students and an instructor will be presenters at the American Red Cross Centennial Celebration Party on Thursday, Jan. 19, in Minneapolis.

UW-Superior students Naomi Effinger and Vanessa Smith, along with professor of Political Science Dr. Khalil Dokhanchi, will be presenting the Refugee for 30 Minutes Exhibit, which has gained notoriety throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota.

“We were looking to add a presentation relating to Red Cross International Services to the event,” said Dan Williams, Executive Director of American Red Cross Northland Chapter.  “As the UW-Superior International Humanitarian Law effort is one of the strongest in the entire nation, our regional office in the Twin Cities jumped at the opportunity to have the UW-Superior group come and present their interactive exhibit.”

The American Red Cross Northland Chapter is a community partner and this event supports their mission to teach members of the community about international humanitarian law.

The Refugee for 30 Minutes Exhibit examines how one becomes a refugee and the refugee experience. By looking at the current crisis in Syria and how it created a refugee crisis in Europe, community and university members become aware of the factors that cause people to become refugee and also have a better understanding of their hopes and fears as they embark on their journey. By using an interactive model, participants learn about choices that are made at each stage of the journey. In addition, the exhibit incorporates various student research projects that they done about different aspects of the refugee problem.

UW-Superior students have been actively teaching the community and university members about the technical aspects of this topic such as the legal definition of who is a refugee and their rights under international humanitarian law and some non-technical issues such as living conditions, food, and safety in the refugee camps.

The event, which is expected to draw more than 200 people, marks 100 years of service for the American Red Cross in Minnesota.
