2016-2017 School Year Mission & Vision

By Janna Stevens

It was with great excitement that the entire staff of the School District of Superior gathered together for breakfast and presentations on August 31, 2016 as the formal WELCOME BACK.

Coming together on the first day of the new school year is always exciting!

The breakfast prepared by our food service team was delicious and the opportunity to sit down and enjoy some time with our colleagues was refreshing.  Ted Schick‘s message to our staff about communication, trust, teamwork, and commitment was energetic and meaningful.  “His energy is contagious!” commented Joan Parenteau, Assistant to the Superintendent.

Our school district continues to work diligently to ensure the word all in our Mission and Vision is actualized. Every aspect of our work must focus on taking great care of ALL of our students.

From our bus drivers and support teams, to our teachers and administrators, each employee of the school district plays a role in fulfilling our Mission and Vision.

Mission & Vision

Here is our Mission and Vision for the new school year:

Mission Provide all children with the relevant tools to develop a foundation for living, learning and working successfully.

Vision The School District of Superior is a learning community characterized by a responsive, child-centered philosophy that respects diversity and supports high expectations for the learning of all in a safe and sustainable environment.

Laptops for every middle and high school student, health care plans for students with medical needs, clearly defining highly productive academic teams, and providing a free breakfast to all are just a few of the ways the Superior District is meeting the needs of all.

After celebrating the outstanding work we are already accomplishing within our Superior District, we were able to celebrate the possibilities for our entire community with the Better City Superior Initiative.

Bruce Thompson, CEO of National Bank of Commerce, and leader of the Better City group, shared the exciting news of an upcoming referendum designed to draw in more businesses, more citizens, and more tourism to Superior. With all of us working together Superior, can become a destination community!

Referendum Work Underway!

While our staff is working tirelessly to meet the needs of all students, our projects on our buildings and grounds over the summer have been a priority. While we didn’t quite meet our goal of having all parking lots, roofs and security completed by the beginning of school, we came very close! Kraus Anderson and LHB continue to lead our district to select the best practices for our projects.

Bryant and Great Lakes elementary schools have new roofs in place. Jamar and Lipe Brothers worked aggressively to complete the project prior to our students arriving, with the final touches being completed in early September.

If you have not had the opportunity to drive by Bryant or Great Lakes, it is worth the trip. Not only are the buildings dry, they look great! Be sure to watch this video to get a bird’s eye view of the work that has been done.

Lake Superior and Four Corners elementary schools have new parking lots due to the outstanding efforts of Benson Electric Company, Northern Interstate Construction and Monarch Paving Company.

We now have our staff parking and bus drop off separated for heightened safety.  In addition, we have significantly more parking spaces at both sites. Again, final work will be completed in September.

Superior High School is moving forward at a feverish rate on the softball field, tennis courts and new storage building.  Our goal continues to be completion of the softball field for our spring season and completion of the tennis courts for the fall of 2017.  The Rettler Corporation has been an outstanding partner to make this vision a reality.

Our NBC Spartan Sports Complex will be the best in the state!

Security enhancements at all facilities is moving forward throughout the fall.  Connecting our police liaison officers and administration with LHB was key in the planning.

We want to ensure the individuals that need to deal with security at our buildings are confident in the design. Work has already begun at Bryant and Great Lakes with the team of Lipe Brothers Construction, Superior Glass and Hunt Electric. All remaining schools will be going out to bid this fall.

Finally, the two major projects, a new Cooper Elementary and major renovations at Superior High School are nearing the final stages of design.  I am very pleased to share that the LHB team has truly listened to the thoughts and ideas of staff and community members in creating these designs.

Our next step is to work with city officials to get approval so we can go out to bid this winter.

While I may be a bit biased, I truly believe the Superior School District is outstanding. Great school districts draw upon the resources of all of their employees as one.  We are all in the same boat, pulling in the same direction in unison.

The best schools are tightly aligned communities marked by a palpable sense of “we.” This defines the Superior District.
