The University of Wisconsin-Superior, for the sixth year in a row, has been named a Military Friendly® School by Victory Media. This is in recognition of the university’s efforts to assist military personnel, veterans and their family members in completing a college education.

UW-Superior features a Veteran and Nontraditional Student Center (VNSC) office that provides a wide range of support programming for veterans of all ages.  Currently 112 students receive GI Bill benefits on campus.  Military service members, veterans and their families make up roughly 5 percent of the entire student body.

The 2016 Military Friendly® Schools designation is awarded to the top colleges, universities, community colleges and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace military students, and to dedicate resources to ensure their success both in the classroom and after graduation. The methodology used for making the Military Friendly® Schools list has changed the student veteran landscape to one much more transparent, and has played a significant role over the past seven years in capturing and advancing best practices to support military students across the country.

UW-Superior Chancellor Renée Wachter was honored that the university has been recognized with the designation of being among the best in the country to service veterans. “UW-Superior assists Armed Forces Veterans to leverage their life experiences to obtain the best educational advantage by helping them get connected, navigate the system, learn and succeed.”

UW-Superior provides a veterans benefits coordinator and office to help veterans understand their government education benefits and to assist with financial arrangements.  The university also tries to maximize the number of military training and credits that veterans can transfer to UW-Superior to apply toward their university degrees.

Tammy Fanning, the associate Dean of Students at UW-Superior, said she is proud that the Veteran and Nontraditional Student Center is getting recognized for their excellent programming throughout the year. “We serve a demographic that faces unique challenges in balancing work, family and school. These students are involved and help to enhance the classroom experience.”

Fanning said it is important to reach out and assist veterans not only in the classroom, but in their personal lives as well. “It is our opportunity to meet them where they are and provide for their educational, social and leadership needs that enrich their growth and development.”

“It is a great honor to receive this distinguished award for a sixth straight year,” said Monte Stewart, associate student services coordinator at UW-Superior. “It goes to show how everyone at the university has committed to helping our military service members be successful, from start to finish.”  Stewart, often assists UW-Superior students in the VNSC.

The campus staff welcome and encourage veterans throughout campus.  “By providing our military members with continuous support and resources available to them, we are able to help them reach their collegiate goals and graduate,” Stewart said. “We have also implemented programs that educate our faculty/staff and students on some of the unique challenges that military students face.”

“Post-secondary institutions earning the 2016 Military Friendly® School award have exceptionally strong programs for transitioning service members and spouses,” said Daniel Nichols, Chief Product Officer of Victory Media and Navy Reserve veteran. “Our Military Friendly® Schools are truly aligning their military programs and services with employers to help students translate military experience, skills and training into successful careers after graduation.”

Victory Media is the leader in successfully connecting the military and civilian worlds, and publisher of G.I. Jobs®, STEM JobsSM and Military Spouse. Now in its seventh year, the original, premier Military Friendly® Schools designation provides service members and their families with transparent, data-driven ratings about post-military education and career opportunities.
