The University of Wisconsin-Superior announced on July 2nd, the hiring of alumnus Daniel Fanning as the Director of Communications and Government Affairs.

Fanning, who began his position June 29, has an extensive and successful background in communications, marketing and legislative relations. Most recently, he served as Director of Communications and Policy for the City of Duluth, MN and the Office of Mayor Don Ness.

He brings significant governmental relations experience from the City of Duluth as well as having served as Deputy State Director for the Office of U.S. Senator Al Franken. He has also served as a communications strategist and advisor for other elected officials in both Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Fanning also brings valuable experience from both the business and non-profit sectors, as well as six years of military service which included a yearlong combat deployment.

“Daniel’s expertise and experience will serve the university very well as we continue to build relationships with legislators, Regents, and local, regional and state constituencies,” said UW-Superior Chancellor Renée Wachter. “We are especially pleased to welcome a Yellowjacket back to campus.”

His responsibilities for UW-Superior include legislative and community relations, and oversight of campus-wide communications and marketing.

“As a proud alumnus of UW-Superior, I know firsthand what a special place this is,” said Fanning. “I look forward to being a strong advocate for the school I love by working closely with our community and state partners. There is a very bright future ahead for UW-Superior. Our communications team looks forward to promoting all our university and community has to offer.”

Fanning holds a bachelor’s degree from UW-Superior and a master’s degree from the University of Minnesota Duluth.
