The University of Wisconsin-Superior will be conducting Winter Commencement on Saturday, December 19 at 2.p.m.  Thorpe Langley Auditorium in Old Main will host the event, and Yoel Yohannes of St. Paul, Minnesota will be the student speaker.

Two hundred students will be eligible to receive diplomas.  Chancellor Renée Wachter will preside over the ceremony. Diplomas will be presented to students who have earned associate, bachelor’s, master’s and specialist’s degrees.

Yoel Yohannes is a candidate for the Bachelor of Arts degree. His major is Communicating Arts with a focus in Communication. Yohannes also earned a minor in Writing.

Yohannes is originally from Asmara, the capital city of Eritrea–a small nation bordering Ethiopia, Sudan and the Red Sea. He came to the United States in March 1998 at the age of five. His family moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, where he lived with his father, mother and younger brother. While growing up, Yohannes was inspired by his hardworking mother and father, who placed a strong emphasis on his children’s education.

After transferring to UW-Superior in the fall of 2012, Yohannes was immediately attracted to student life on campus. He became involved in theater productions, student government, the Office of Multicultural Affairs. He also joined the college radio station, KUWS 91.3 FM. Yohannes remained active at KUWS throughout his college career, first as a CD reviewer and later becoming the producer of a weekly show called “People of Color.”

Yohannes has built strong connections with his fellow Yellowjackets by participating in CRU, Residence Hall Association, Residence Life, the World Student Association and the school newspaper, “The Stinger.” He was president of the Black Student Union for the 2013-2014 school year, and enjoyed the opportunity to make valuable connections with students from all around the world.

After graduation, Yohannes plans to either live and work in the Twin Cities or intern in the Los Angeles area. He hopes to jump start his dream career of editing, writing or directing films. If he is fortunate enough to make films, he hopes to share Eritrean stories with Americans.
