Creating a Link

If you type a web address, or URL, into your post, like “http://www.twinportsnightout.com,” it should automatically link, but there’s a better way of doing this that will make you look like a web hipster.

Instead, write something like this, “Check out the Twin Ports Night Out website,” or “Click HERE, for info on dining and entertainment events in the Twin Ports.”  When done properly, the underlined words will act as a direct link to the website.

If you are creating a link in a post (as opposed to a comment), you can use the link icon in order to create a link (unless you know HTML code and prefer typing it out).

See the picture  below to locate the link icon on the blog page (circled in red.)

Follow these steps to create a link:

  1. Highlight the word (or words) that you want linked.
  2. Click the link icon.
  3. The “Insert/edit link” box will open.
  4. In the “URL” field, enter the Web address you wish to link to. You can do this by going to the webpage you are linking to and copying the URL from the box at the top of the page showing its address. Then paste it into the URL box on the WordPress screen in front of you.
  5. Then click in the box that says “Open link in a new window” so that a green check appears in it. This will cause your link to open a new browser window for your link. Your readers will appreciate this since it will NOT take them away from ESB.
  6. Now click the “Add Link” button in the lower right hand corner of the “Insert/edit link” box and the text that you’ve highlighted to be linked will now appear with an underline, indicating it is linked.

Unfortunately, if you want to create a link in a comment, you will have to use HTML code. For example, to create the link used in the sample sentence from the second paragraph of these instructions, you’ll have to follow the example below and type the appropriate code.
