Bryant Elementary Students Help Sudanese
By Brooklyn Beattie, 5th Grade Student at Bryant Elementary School
Have you taken any books from the Little Free Libraries in Superior, Wisconsin? Last winter Battle of the Books students at Bryant Elementary read the book A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Parks and were inspired to help the people of Sudan. They organized a fundraiser! Kids at Bryant School paid a dollar to wear a hat. We gave half the money to Wells for Sudan but we also wanted to do something local so we collected money for Little Free Libraries.
You may be wondering, what is a Little Free Library?
“A Little Free Library is a place where you can leave books and take books in your own neighborhood. You won’t have to go through the hassle of going to the Library. You can just walk by and take a book! No Library Cards needed!”
The 6 Little Free Libraries all look different in their own way but they basically look like mailboxes or Birdhouses full of books! All of the Libraries have books of all different genres and levels! You can even find adult books in many of them. But where are these Libraries?
Some locations you can go to, to take a book are (click links for directions):
If you are in need of a good book a Little Free Library is the perfect place to search. The libraries are PACKED with books thanks to many donations!
Some cool facts about Little Free Libraries:
- There are about 25,000-30,000 Little Free Libraries in over 75 countries
- The Little Free Library base is in Madison, WI
- Little Free Libraries were founded in 2009
- All 50 States have Little Free Libraries (So it’s pretty cool we have 6 in Superior)

So aren’t the Little Free Libraries cool? I think it’s really cool how they started in Wisconsin and are now a worldwide sensation! So, how did we get the supplies for the Little Free Libraries? The Bryant hat day raised over 300 dollars so about 150 dollars went towards the supplies for the Little Free Libraries. Barb and Dan Aunet (the parents of a teacher at Bryant) donated materials for the Little Free Libraries and built a few of them. They were very generous to do that so we owe them a big Thank You!
Thank You to everyone who help out with putting Little Free Libraries in Superior. It doesn’t matter if you wore a hat or built the Libraries, because you helped out and every hat you wore counted into making Superior a better place!
