Chickens and Animals Studied by Elementary Students
By Jennifer Sullivan, 5th Grade Teacher, Great Lakes Elementary School
After School Program students at Great Lakes School welcomed spring with a research project on life cycles. Grades kindergarten through second focused their learning on the life cycle of chickens. They read many books on the topic and also enjoyed a movie.
Students were especially interested in the various stages that a chicken egg goes through before hatching into a brand new chick. In the third through fifth grades, students researched the life cycle of an animal which they chose. They utilized a variety of on-line research tools available from our library’s home fusion page.
As students researched, they recorded information into a graphic organizer which displayed the various life stages in a cycle.
As a culmination of this fun project, k-5 students came together to make a chicken craft out of paper plates, construction paper and Easter egg grass. Parents who came in to pick up their children at this time, joined right in on the project. This project addressed many different sets of standards including technology, reading, writing, and science.
