Northern Lights Students Take 2nd at Competition

By Melanie Swanson

Battle of the Books - Wisconsin | Explore SuperiorThis year Northern Lights Elementary School had about fifty, 4th and 5th graders, take on the challenge of Battle of the Books. Students are expected to read twenty books and memorize titles and authors of each book.

Twenty of those students persevered and took the test to determine who would be on the teams to represent Northern Lights at the District battle.  From those 20 students, we took the top scorers to form two teams of three students each. The first team was made up of one 5th grader and two 4th graders (Ruby Farnham, Diedrick Nikoi, and Lauren Gunderson).

The second team was made up of all 4th graders (Jason Thomas, Lana Jensen, and Lucia Fedyn). The first team went on to win first place at the School District of Superior’s battle on April 23; they went on to compete against 14 other teams from schools across Northwestern Wisconsin at CESA 12 in Ashland on May 6.

Ruby Farnham, Diedrick Nikoi, and Lauren Gunderson made it through the first three rounds with a perfect score.  They missed one question in round four and won second place in the competition.  Way to go, Northern Lights Battle of the Books teams!
