Caribou Coffee is about to open its first location in Superior, located in UW-Superior’s Yellow Jacket Union. It will not be an actually Caribou Coffee store, though. It is, as before, Jacket Java, but now brewing Caribou Coffee.
How is it different than a regular Caribou store? “The operation is “we proudly brew Caribou.” We use their cups and brew their coffee–we have the rights for that, but the signature items in their signature stores we don’t have,” said Director of Dining Services at UWS, Jeff Spangenberg. “I really feel its going to be a great addition here.”
Toward the end of the spring semester students were given a survey to find out which coffee provider they wanted to see in the YellowJacket Union next school year. Caribou won out the vote against Starbucks, Peace Coffee, and many other companies.
The official grand opening date is not known at this time but Spangenberg says it will be around the same time that the fall semester begins, which is September 2.
Caribou is the second largest coffee company in the United States. It was founded in 1992, and has expanded into 10 countries, and 18 states. Their coffee is Rain forest Alliance certified, which means their coffee beans are grown in sustainable ways to protect the the earth, plus the workers and their families are treated well.
Jacket Java is located in the YellowJacket Union which is a public space on the UWS campus.
