Problem Solving Skills Highlighted
By Robyn Deshayes, Principal, Northern Lights Elementary
Early in 5th grade year, students signed up to be part of the Math Masters Club, which meets for one hour each Wednesday afternoon. This club consisted of 20 members who worked individually, and in teams to raise their math problem solving skills to a new height.
Ten students from this club were chosen to participate at the local competition which was held on Friday, April 24th, at the Duluth Gospel Tabernacle. Michael Miner, Tyler Friedrich, Nam Nguyen, Lili Groslie, and Raya Schultz made up Team 1.
Team 2 consisted of Eujin Vang, Olivia Johnson, Kailey Roeber, Tristan Rose, and Austin LaLonde.
The competition includes an individual number facts/order of operations round, four individual problem-solving rounds, and three group problem-solving rounds with team members cooperating over the solutions.
The competition lasted approximately three to four hours, including short breaks with snacks.
After the competition, the students enjoyed lunch as a team at Pizza Hut.
The kids worked hard to be involved in the competition, and as a result they did a great job!
