The UW-Superior men’s ice hockey teamed played their first home game of the season Nov. 6 against the Augsburg College Auggies. The final score was 4-3, with the ‘Jackets winning the game in overtime to a crowd of over 750.
Anton Svensson scored the first goal of the game, lifting the crowd to their feet in cheers. At the end of the first period, the Auggies were able to get past UWS goalie Cory Simons and tie the game 1-1.
With assists from Daniel Litchke, and Eric Shand, Ian Ecklund was able to bring the YellowJackets ahead once again. Within the next six minuets, the Auggies scored two more points taking the lead at the end of the second.
Between the first and second periods, UWS celebrated Jacket Racket weekend by offering free tuition for a semester to the winner of a series of challenges. First, three students competed to see who could move 20 M&M’s from one cup to another using only a straw. Brian Weltzien won that and the next two challengers, and in the second period intermission went on to the last challenge that would win him free tuition. The goal was to hit a puck from the center ice into a hole in the goal only slightly larger than the puck. Weltzien did not make the goal, but did win two gift cards and free pizza for a year.
During a power play in the third period, Viktor Sallhag scored with asistance from Owen Stauber, and Nik Kosman, tying the ‘Jackets and Auggies 3-3 at the games end, sending the teams into overtime.
It only took a minuet and a half for Svensson to score, letting the Jackets win their first home game of the season at Wessman Arena. They would tie against St. Thomas at Wessman the following day.
