UWS Enrollment Experiences Huge Increase

As new UW-Superior students move into residence halls, Sunday, August 30, the University is happily welcoming a larger than usual Freshman class. The University of Wisconsin-Superior is about to start the fall semester with significantly higher numbers of incoming freshman and a school record of international students.

  • Increase (+13%) in New Freshmen, on-campus for fall 2015 from a year ago
  • International Students (+25%) setting a new school record from over 40 countries
  • Increase (+5%) in continuing Undergraduate, Distance Learning Degree Seeking student enrollments

These impressive numbers show that UW-Superior will continue to be a regional leader in higher education in Northwestern Wisconsin for years to come.  This incoming class will be part of the 122nd academic year at UW-Superior which was founded in 1893.

UW-Superior Chancellor Renée Wachter is excited to see the University continuing to meet the needs of students not only in Superior but throughout the United States and world as part of its mission to respect diverse cultures and multiple voices.

The new and returning students move into the residence halls at UW-Superior this Sunday, August 30, and new freshmen begin a three-day orientation program as part of Weekend of Welcome.

Classes at UW-Superior begin Wednesday, Sept. 2

  • MOVE-IN DAY: Students move into campus residence halls on Catlin Avenue on Sunday, August 30.  Peak arrival time is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Students, faculty and staff on the Move-In Crew will be assisting new arrivals.
  • A class photo of the new freshman will take place at 1:45 p.m. inside the Yellowjacket Union on Sunday, August 30.
  • New UW-Superior students mark their formal entrance to the academic world when they take part in the New Student Induction Ceremony starting at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 31, in Thorpe Langley Auditorium in Old Main 2nd

During the Monday induction ceremony students will learn about UW-Superior’s history and the importance of the liberal arts at UW-Superior. Then faculty members will present students with the mortarboard tassels they will wear when graduating.

Monday, August 31:  UW-Superior faculty and staff members have lunch at the New Beginnings Luncheon starting at noon at the Yellowjacket Union patio. The luncheon enables students, faculty and staff members to meet in a relaxed atmosphere and discuss academic programs and students’ plans.

Monday, August 31:  Jacket Smash events at Ole Haugsrud Field and Paint the Street in front of the Yellowjacket Union from 2 p.m-4 p.m.

Facts and figures on the 2015 fall semester:

International students will be coming from a new school record of over 40 different countries this year with many taking part in athletics.  It will mark the highest number of international students in school history with approximately 190 attending, which is more than 25% increase from fall of 2014.

UWS expects to enroll approximately 90 incoming international students from 27 countries this fall, by far the largest and most diverse incoming class on record at UW-Superior.  The previous high was 61 in 2010.

  • Countries that will be represented in 2015-2016 that were not represented last year are Czech Republic, Egypt, Guatemala, and India.
  • ESLi, the intensive English program at UW-Superior, is also expected to enroll 13 new students, bringing the total number of incoming international students on the UW-Superior campus to approximately 100. ESLi remains the only intensive English language program in the Twin Ports.
  • Approximately 30 of the incoming international class will be student-athletes. The men’s soccer team will have players from Australia, Brazil, England, Scotland, Spain and Sweden.

Mark MacLean is the Director of International Programs at UW-Superior and is proud that UW-Superior is known not only throughout the region but throughout the world as well. “International students come to UW-Superior to get a first-class education, and they contribute so much to campus. They enrich our classrooms, the residence halls, athletic teams and student organizations.”  He said meeting the new international students and welcoming them to campus is his favorite time of the year.  “I think it’s great that the university has made this a priority, and we’re proud that UW-Superior has the highest percentage of international students in the region. It gives our American students the opportunity to have international experiences right here in Superior, Wisconsin. The new international students seem to be adjusting well so far. They are a big, diverse group and they seem to be making friends fast.”

  • Approximately 810 students will live in residence halls, which is at 92% capacity
  • Total student enrollment will be approximately 2,600 students this fall, including undergraduate, graduate and distance learning students.
