SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Superior’s Continuing Education Department will be holding a community forum about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to increase understanding of the disorder and to discuss joys and struggles of living with ASD.

The forum, Celebrating Autism: Where we are now; where we want to be, will be held Thursday, April 16, from 5:45 to 8:30 p.m. in room 1054 of Swenson Hall on the campus of UW-Superior. General fees are $10 for adults, $5 for youth, and $20 for professionals (CEUs for 1.45 contact hours). Fees include a light meal and refreshments. Several Twin Ports organizations that provide services to people with autism will have exhibits. Creative works of young adults with autism will be also be displayed at the event.

My Child Has Autism, NOW WHAT?, By Dr.Susan Larson KiddAccording to Esther Gieschen, program manager at the Center for Continuing Education, “this forum will be valuable to families of someone with autism who want to connect with other families, hear from other families, and expand their knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD); for professionals in health, human services, and education who have opportunities to work with people who have autism and want to learn more about ASD and the challenges and rewards families experience; and for anyone who knows someone with autism or knows a family member of someone with autism and wants to understand more.”    

Dr. Susan Larson Kidd will deliver the keynote presentation and will facilitate a discussion with a panel of parents of children with ASD and young adults with ASD.  She is a consultant, author and speaker nationally and abroad, and delivers behavioral, educational and social/emotional programming to children and youth on the Autism Spectrum. She is author of the books “My Child Has Autism, NOW WHAT?” and “Turning on the Brains of Autism: Social Neuroscience for Education” (in press).
