Perhaps the prospect of a President Hilary Clinton is her inspiration, or perhaps she is just committed to making a contribution to her hometown, but whatever the reason, Kalee Hermanson of South Superior, and a member of the City’s Plan Commission, announced her plan to run for mayor of Superior on November 13th at “A Dozen Excuses Donuts” in downtown Superior.

According to Hermanson, “it’s been such a long decision to make” one which she has been “thinking about…since June.”  The fifth candidate to enter the race, she joins current Mayor Bruce Hagen, City Councilor Mike Herrick, County Board Supervisor Jim Paine, and former City Councilor Greg Mertzig.  It’s a full field, and she faces a challenging race.

The 29 year old works as a communications and human resources coordinator at New Page in Duluth, and lives in South Superior with her husband and daughter.  A Superior native, she graduated from Superior High School, and earned her B.S. degree in sociology and business administration from UWS. She has served as a board member of the United Way of Superior-Douglas County, and Junior Achievement of the Twin Ports.  Mayor Hagen appointed her to the Plan Commission two years ago.

Hermanson hopes to make the City of Superior more family oriented, through creating jobs that can sustain a family, or by building a sense of community through more family events.  She said, “I want to see new industries come in and people get higher-paying jobs.”  She also would like to see “families come together, whether it be an indoor playground, or some sort of children’s museum.”

She concedes that the City has made strides toward improvement recently, referencing the renewal of Tower Avenue in the downtown area. That aside, she hopes to “bring a new sense of Superior” and to “get back to finding out what the community wants, what we can do for them to help them.”

Hermanson pledged to “listen to the community and think outside the box.”  Ultimately, her goal is to “make a difference in our community.”

Although she doesn’t have a campaign website yet, she has created a Facebook page that can be viewed HERE.  She can also be contacted by email HERE.
