National PTA Names LSE “School of Excellence”
By Mark Howard
Recently, Lake Superior Elementary’s PTA collected data about our school, programs, students, and families using a PTA survey tool. As a result of this survey, we were excited to learn that we were selected as 1 of 50 schools in the nation recognized by the national PTA as a “School of Excellence.”
As an added incentive for this program, all 50 schools will be awarded 20 Kindle e-readers from National PTA Council and Amazon.
The PTA Family Reading Experience program has been built around research that shows significant academic gains in those children/families that engage in early literacy while reading as a family at home. Our school looks forward to supporting a family night activity this fall that will use our set of Kindles (and other electronic devices) as a “tool” to access reading.
This family night will be a joint effort with UW-Superior Service Learning students as our students and families explore books/text that have an “Under the Sea” theme. This event is being scheduled for Thursday, Nov 12th from 6pm to 7:30pm.
The 20 Kindle e-readers received from our award will be inventoried in our school library so classroom teachers will be able to check out the whole set of Kindles which would mean all students within that classroom would have access to a device.
We are proud of our school, student, staff, and families and would like you to become involved in our PTA.
We look forward to seeing you at our next PTA meeting on Wed., Oct.21st, or our Pumpkin Family Night on Tue., Oct 27th!
