The new virtual Career Treks provide a way for students to engage with industry professionals, expand networks and increase awareness of career possibilities.
As college students advance through their academic journey, the University of Wisconsin-Superior provides a wealth of opportunities to explore future careers and connect with a host of employers. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic forced UW-Superior to create new virtual engagement and networking opportunities that traditionally would have taken place in person such as career fairs and guest speakers.
Just as many other parts of the college experience have transitioned online, so has one major career searching tool for UW-Superior students.
Traditionally, Career Trek is an opportunity for students to meet with companies in person. It’s a unique way for students to learn about an employer of interest, job or internship opportunities available and what qualities the organization might look for in candidates. During the 2020-21 academic year, career services offices across the UW System teamed to provide a total of 26 virtual Career Treks.
“The virtual aspect opened the doors for our campus to provide this amazing opportunity to our students,” said Haley Carr, UW-Superior employer relations and events specialist. “Each week students get to hear straight from employers about their respective organizations, company culture and hiring practices. The collaboration with career services colleagues across the UW System has allowed us all to provide more opportunities and connections for students at our respective campuses. It’s truly a phenomenal program and partnership.”
Virtual Career Treks, which take place every Wednesday at 2 p.m., provide a way for students to engage with industry professionals, expand networks and increase awareness of career possibilities. Featuring employers with ties to Wisconsin, the first virtual event of the spring semester will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, featuring J.B. Hunt. Registration is available online. There will be a total of 13 featured employers during the spring semester, the same amount as during the fall semester.
“The Career Services offices across the UW System were able to come together to develop a really fantastic program to benefit our students and Wisconsin employers,” said Carr. “Our lineup of employers in the fall and spring was intentionally chosen to highlight a wide variety of industries and opportunities for students.”
That mixture proved to be popular with students as more than 450 from across the UW System participated in fall virtual Career Treks.
