Mock Trial to Hold Court at State
By Gabby Gidley
A win at the Brookfield Academy Invitational Mock Trial on Jan. 17 started off mock trial’s successful season.
“Our team took first out of 20 teams and beat the team that took second in the state tournament last year,” Gondik said.
Mock Trial went to the state tournament the past two years on wild cards. They ended up finishing in the top 10 out of 100 teams in the state last year.
In the past, the team had cases such as civil disputes. However, this year, the team received a criminal case rather than a civil case.
“It’s definitely a lot more interesting,” Gondik said.
The Mock Trial team started with over 40 students and eventually had to make cuts this year. After cuts were made, they split up into Team 1, Team 2 and Team 3.
Teams are made up of three attorneys, three witnesses per side and a time keeper. The team has to study and practice both sides of the case. They don’t know which side they will be presenting until about 15 minutes before the round. They then have 40 minutes to present their case.
This year, Team 1 received a wild card at regionals, and at the State level on March 7.
