Superior H.S. Archery Club Spotlight
By Holden Wilmore
Archery Club is hard at work preparing for the state tournament in hopes of qualifying for a return to the national tournament.
The club practices after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays and is coached by science teachers Bill Reynolds and Pete Conley. Some members participate in invitational tournaments held by other schools. The first invitational tournament that archery team members attended was in Stratford, Wis., on Feb. 28. Superior hosted its own invitational tournament on March 28.
“We have a good group of freshmen this year as well as returning shooters that are building on skills they learned last year,” Reynolds said.
One of the returning shooters is senior Kenzie Britton, who has shot for the high school club for all four years of high school. Britton said that this year the coaches are pushing her and her teammates towards making another appearance at the national tournament in Louisville, Ky., on May 9.
“My favorite part about archery is knowing you can always improve your score with every practice,” Britton said.
To qualify for the national tournament, the team must either take first place in the state tournament in Wisconsin Rapids on April 9-11 or have their top 12 archers shoot a combined total of 3,000 points. These standards are set by National Archery in the Schools Program, and all teams nationwide must meet these standards to compete at the national level.
Archery Club continues to look for participants into their season and encourages people to join the club this year or next season.
