The University of Wisconsin-Superior is proud to announce a $15,000 grant that will be awarded to students from Minnesota who attend the university thanks to a partnership with the Northland Foundation.

The grant came to UW-Superior through the Northland Foundation, an organization founded in 1986 which focuses on serving Northeastern Minnesota communities. UW-Superior is honored to be worthy of the foundation awarding this grant to an organization that is outside their primary service area. Since the Northland Foundation started, they have awarded more than 4,100 grants totaling over $30 million donated.

The grant, which is a local match for the ‘Jacket Internship Financial Assistance program (JIFA), stems from a collaboration with organizations including the Northland Foundation, the UW-Superior Foundation and Advancement Department, the Grants and Research Department, and Career Services. This grant in particular will support Minnesota students who attend UW-Superior and are participating in an internship; this new partnership will make the internships paid.

“Building partnerships with our local community is a strategic priority for both UW-Superior and the UW-Superior Foundation,” said Jeanne Thompson, vice chancellor for advancement and executive director of the UW-Superior Foundation. “We are proud and honored that they have chosen to support our university and students.”

This new grant is just one of the many resources that UW-Superior has for its students. Not only do internships help students learn about their career field from the inside, they help to decide if this is the right career for them, enables students to work alongside professionals in their chosen field, and allows students to apply the knowledge that they learned during their time at UW-Superior.

The university will use the grant to create new paid internships and turn previously unpaid internships into paid internships. This is extremely beneficial for students who do not receive enough financial aid to cover college expenses.

The University of Wisconsin-Superior is a nationally recognized public liberal arts institution of over 2,600 students in the Duluth-Superior, MN-WI metro area. UW-Superior now has more than 60 program offerings, select graduate programs, and competitive Division III athletics programs, as well as research and scholarship that support the community and region.
