Yellowjackets Give Back with Ugly Sweater Promo

This weekend Yellowjacket Athletics will be getting in the holiday spirit, with multiple activities driven toward the holidays taking place at home games.
Friday night, when the Yellowjacket men’s hockey team plays host to UW-River Falls at 7:05 p.m., Yellowjacket Athletics and Ragstock will sponsor “Ugly Christmas Sweater Night.” Fans are encouraged to wear ugly Christmas sweaters to the game that night, with prizes being awarded to the best, or ugliest sweater in attendance. The Yellowjackets will also be wearing a special, limited edition ugly Christmas sweater jersey on the ice that night, with all jerseys being auctioned off after the game.
In addition, the Yellowjackets will be holding their annual “Teddy Bear Toss.” Fans are asked to bring a teddy bear to the game and, after the Yellowjackets score their first goal of the game, hurl the bears on the ice. All of the bears collected will be donated to local hospitals, police, and fire departments. Yellowjacket Athletics will also be holding a collection for the Superior “Toys for Tots.” Fans in attendance are asked to bring a new, unopened toy that will be donated to the local toy drive conducted by the Superior Fire Department. “Toys for Tots” provides gifts during the holidays for underprivileged children in Superior and Douglas County.
Saturday afternoon the Yellowjacket women’s basketball team will makes its home debut at Mertz Mortorelli Gym as they host WIAC rival UW-Stevens Point. At that game Yellowjacket Athletics will also be collecting toys to benefit “Toys for Tots.”
Finally, Saturday night the Yellowjacket women’s hockey team will be hosting UW-River Falls at 7:00 p.m. It will be another Ragstock “Ugly Christmas Sweater Night” at Wessman Arena, with fans again encouraged to break out their ugly Christmas sweaters for the occasion. Like the men the previous night, the Yellowjacket women’s hockey team will be wearing special ugly Christmas sweater jerseys that will be auctioned off following the game. The game will also feature another collection that will benefit the local chapter of “Toys for Tots.”
“It’s that time of year when people are making the transition from Thanksgiving into the holidays, and we were looking for something unique to do. After a group of us talked it over we thought that the ugly Christmas sweater theme could be a lot of fun, and definitely different from anything that people have done in the past, so we decided to go for it,” Yellowjacket Athletics Director Steve Nelson said. “I hope that the games are well received and that fans in attendance are generous with their toy and teddy bear donations. We need to remember how fortunate we are and help those that need us during this time.”
