Victory Over Violence Exhibit Opens Today

Exhibit Runs through Oct. 2 in Swenson Hall

This exhibit will be open Sept. 21 to Oct. 2 in Swenson Hall on the UW-Superior campus. Individuals and groups are invited to tour the free exhibit.

A special invitation is extended to attend tonight’s opening reception, from 5 to 6 p.m. in Swenson Hall with keynote speaker Carl Crawford, educator and community development expert.

 

The goal of the exhibit is to contribute to a culture of peace through awareness, introspection, individual empowerment and a courageous and creative commitment to dialogue. It encourages respect, trust and friendship among young people, families, schools and communities across all boundaries such as race, religion and culture.

Summit to focus on growing issue of bullying

Register now for Victory over Bullying: A Northland Summit to Explore Impact, Causes & Responses. This all-day event will take place Wednesday, Sept. 30, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. in the Yellowjacket Union on the campus of UW-Superior.

Victory Over Bullying | Explore SuperiorAttendees will learn about the impact of, and solutions to, bullying as it affects all of us, throughout our lives – at work, school, and play – even at senior housing and care facilities. The summit is intended for people school age through older adult in all walks of life.

Did you know?
• 37% of American workers (54 million) report being bullied at work; when adding in bystanders affected, percentages rise to 49% affected. (U.S. Bullying Survey, 2007)
• One out of every four students (22%) report being bullied during the school year (National Center for Educational Statistics, 2015). 19.6% of high school students in the U.S. report being bullied at school in the past year. 14.8% reported being bullied online. (Center for Disease Control, 2014)
• Bullying also plagues senior centers, assisted living facilities and nursing homes. Between 10 and 20 percent of residents in senior care homes are mistreated by peers. (AARP Bulletin, March 2012)
