Today’s Question: #6

What is the one major accomplishment that you hope to achieve if you are elected Mayor?

Bruce Hagen

Mayor Bruce Hagen, Superior, Wisconsin

Mayor Bruce Hagen

My experience and vision has not changed since being your Mayor from 1975-87 as to what makes a community successful and welcoming.

Simply put, I will continue to focus on the “image” of Superior by improving and keeping the public areas clean and crisp.  Continue to invest in our “infrastructure” to make the streets, parks and underground systems safe, presentable and more functional .  And what I do best – diversified “economic development”.  That is the backbone of all communities and its success.

My one major accomplishment I hope to achieve is to create the beginnings of a family-friendly City. Aside from education, family is the single most important aspect of a child’s life. The future of our children not only depends on the type of education they receive, but also their family life growing up. They grow up so fast, and we only have a small time to teach them important morals and values. Children learn from us, and it is important for families to spend time together.

Right now, Superior offers minimal places for families to get together and interact together outside the home. Duluth provides most of our family entertainment, but not everyone has the means or the money to get to Duluth. We need to invest in our community, and give people the option to get together right here in Superior. We need to keep our youth active and give them a place to play during our long winters.

As Mayor, I plan to work with local businesses, grant writers, and state officials to build a Community Center. Many cities our size have already built Community Centers, and they continue to be a great place for children to connect and learn to play together. During the summer months, we have a great place to gather for Movies in the Park at Barkers Island. We have the untouched Superior Municipal Forest that can be opened up for family activities and unique trails. There are a number of things we can do to foster those family relationships. Our children are impressionable at these young ages. We need to focus our attention on them, and give them opportunities to create a healthy and productive life for many years to come.

There are several of course. The one that comes to mind, is to continue to balance the budget without reducing core services, such as Police and Fire and those essential services that we depend upon such as public works.

This would also involve the return of shared revenue from the State and working on and having funding from the tipping fees that we pay to the DNR returned.  This won’t be easy, but we must continue to try, working with our State Senator and representative.

Greg Mertzig

Greg Mertzig, Mayoral Candidate, Superior Wisconsin

Greg Mertzig

Superior’s greatest strength is the people.  Our community is hardworking, moralistic, and principled.  We are friends to our neighbors, and we are committed to making the best out of any situation.

That being said, Superior deserves leadership that considers the people in every decision made, and as Mayor my number one consideration will be, “what is in the best interest of our community.”  Every issue confronted will be determined with this consideration.

Jim Paine

Jim Paine, Mayoral Candidate, Superior Wisconsin

Jim Paine

While there are several specific things I hope to achieve, the greatest accomplishment I can hope and work for is to measurably increase the quality of life in Superior.

We can measure this by an increase in home ownership, a working rental code, an increase in median wages and a decrease in the average age of our citizens as young people move to or stay in Superior.

Watch for individual posts dedicated to each candidate, with all of their answers to each of the six questions all together.
