Basketball Rec League Spotlight
By Kyler Krob
Friday Night Rec basketball is an organization held at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. This program is for students who did not make or did not wish to participate in the high school basketball program but still enjoy the sport.
Currently in its ninth year, the league is made up of 5 girls’ teams and 18 boys’ teams with players who are between 14-18 years old. All of the teams must be the same gender, which is in the league rulebook.
Junior Hailey Gronquist is on one of the girls’ teams, “The A Squad,” this year.
“Our team stands for ‘The Average Squad,’ but we kind of keep that on the downlow,” Gronquist said.
She used to play for the high school basketball team but felt rec was a better fit this year.
Gronquist feels that the biggest attraction of rec basketball is that it is not a large time commitment.
“We only practice one day out of the week,” Gronquist said.
“South Rec” player junior Tate Schlicting feels he made the right choice and has more fun with rec league.
“It’s just a way for me to continue playing the game when high school is not an option,” Schlicting said.
He had exciting moments this season, such as witnessing junior Nick Androsky’s vicious block against another team.
Gronquist has also had exciting action-packed games. “I like playing the Woodland Hills team because they act crazy out on the court, which makes it pretty fun,” Gronquist said.
Playoffs started March 17 in the University of Wisconsin-Superior gymnasium.
