The Superior School District has expressed it’s thankfulness for all who have donated to the creation of their new Spartan Sports Complex. The complex opened to crowds of enthusiastic supporters this past fall, and will surely become an integral part of living in our community for many years to come.
There is still time to get your name on the donor wall at the complex, while also supporting athletic and educational programs at Superior High School. Individuals and companies donating $100 or more, will have their name added to the donor wall in the summer of 2015. To make a donation now, click HERE. All donations are tax deductible.
Some History on the Development of the Sports Complex
On October 15, 2013, the School Board approved a plan to move forward on the planning and construction of a new track/field, football, soccer and baseball complex at Superior High School. Ground was broken on April 17, 2014, and the complex finally opened August 29, 2014. The vision was for a multi-use facility offering students, athletes, fans, and the community a safe, comfortable and modern venue for extended year-round sports and regional events. The goal was to create a venue that we can call “OUR HOUSE.”
In the early 1980’s, the School District of Superior separated from the city. At that time, a fund called the “sinking fund” was turned over to the District. The School Board at the time had the forward vision to invest the money which was approximately $1.4 million. That investment matured in 2004-2005 with a new balance of $6.4 million. The School Board at that time also had the forward vision to pass a resolution that only the interest would be used–and only used for capital projects. This interest, coupled with the old building fund, provided enough money available to move forward on Spartan Sports Complex project without putting anything on the taxpayers! The current School Board continues to have a forward view of not only using the money as intended but also planning for the future by building the fund back up for future Boards.
Families, alumni, fans, civic and business leaders, and community-involved corporations all have become sponsors of the new Spartan Sports Complex. With your tax-deductible donation, you too can be a part of a great asset to our community. This comprehensive project provides more than just a premier, multi-purpose athletic complex for Superior students. It is also a community-wide resource for recreational needs and regional events. “Spartan Pride” means “Superior Pride.”
