UWS Student Receives Prestigious Scholarships

UW-Superior junior and Superior native Natalie Burger earned two T&L scholarships.

SUPERIOR, Wis. – Natalie Burger, who graduated from Superior High school and is a junior at UW-Superior majoring in Transportation and Logistics Management, has been awarded two prestigious scholarships one from the Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) Foundation and one from the Howard Bernstein Scholarship Fund.

The WTS Foundation awards scholarships to women who are pursuing careers in transportation through undergraduate and graduate programs. The scholarships are competitive and based on the applicant’s specific transportation goals.

WTS is an international organization dedicated to building the future of transportation through the global advancement of women. With nearly 6,000 members, including both women and men, WTS is turning the glass ceiling into a career portal through its professional programs, networking opportunities, and unparalleled access to industry and government leaders. Each year the (WTS) Wisconsin Chapter honors exceptional young women as they pursue careers in the transportation industry. Winners of these scholarships are nominated to the WTS Foundation for national scholarship consideration. The WTS Foundation in a national selection process evaluating graduate and undergraduate students and awarded Natalie Burger the Molitoris Leadership Scholarship.

The purpose of the Molitoris Leadership Scholarship is to motivate and reward women who demonstrate leadership in the transportation industry, ensuring that the essential leadership, skills and perspective of women are included in planning the transportation systems of the future. Leadership does not just happen. Leaders personally invest and risk much.  They take on struggles that many would avoid and persevere to reach successful outcomes.

Natalie who works as a research assistant in UW-Superior’s Transportation and Logistics Research Center demonstrated excellence in leadership with the Center’s 2014 Rail and Intermodal Youth Summer Program.  She also has been a leader in providing supporting research that is being used in developing public presentation and articles.

Natalie said she was honored to be recognized for her work in the industry “I feel grateful to be awarded the Molitoris Leadership Scholarship.  It is an honor to represent the UW-Superior Transportation and Logistics Management Program. The opportunities presented by the T&L program have allowed me to assist in leading youth transportation programs.  I have enjoyed sharing my interest in the field, while helping youth learn about the transportation industry.”

Burger also received an elite (the highest level) Howard Bernstein Scholarship sponsored by Conger Toyota Lift and Transamerican Equipment.  The scholarship program is administered by the Material Handling Education Foundation, Inc. in partnership with the Material Handling Equipment Distributors Association and MHI.  The mission of the Material Handling Education Foundation, Inc. is to promote the study of material handling, logistics and the supply chain by exposing students and educators to the industry through financial support.

The Howard Bernstein Scholarship Fund was established in 2012 to provide scholarships to students who have committed to the material handling, industrial distribution, engineering, logistics and supply chain industries.

The scholarship awards are limited to juniors and seniors at pre-qualified schools who have committed to study the material handling, industrial distribution, engineering, logistics and supply chain curricula. UW-Superior’s Transportation and Logistics Management major is one of relatively few programs in the U.S. that is pre-qualified to have students apply for these scholarships.

The Superior native was thrilled to earn this scholarship as well, “I am honored to receive this award. It will greatly help with my academic fees next year as I pursue my senior year studying transportation and logistics at UW-Superior.”
