You can order pizza, buy clothes, pay your bills, and read news articles all on the internet. Recently in the Twin Ports garage sales and yard sales have made this shift as well, and its so much more than just Craigslist.

The facebook group “Twin Ports MN Online Garage Sale” is only a few people away from having 12,000 members. “$99 or less furniture site! (Duluth/Superior) has over 5,000 members. “Garage Sales in Superior”, “Duluth Exchange, Swap, and Sell (DESS)”, “Superior Wi, Duluth Mn, Garage Sales or Barter”, “UWS- Buy, Sell, Trade”, and “Superior Buy and Sell” collectively have 21,800 members, and I didn’t even list all the groups there are, and that is just facebook. Notably Craigslist sees an average of 60 million visitors to their site each month in the United States.

It is clear why garage sales, which have always taken place in, you know, garages, have moved online. With that much visibility for what you are selling, you can sell faster. Instead of hoping those who do attend your sale buy items, you post your sale to a medium with the potential for thousands upon thousands of shoppers. It benefits the shopper as well; they can scan the page looking for what they want, or even make a post requesting an item they are looking for and wait for the sellers to come to them.

Is the popularity of garage sales and their adjunct move online unique to the Twin Ports? Not particularly. It is a shift that is coming almost naturally with the internet-age. It does not mean you will no longer see yards filled with belongings, but it does make selling those belongings a lot easier.
