On Thursday July 16, Mohammad Youssuf Abdulazeez opened fire on Marines outside of a recruitment center in Chattanooga, Tennessee, killing four and wounding three. Among the deceased was Sgt. Carson A. Holmquist, a Polk, Wisconsin native.

Holmquist began active duty in January, 2009 and served two tours in Afghanistan–on in 2013, the other in 2014. He is father to a two year old named Wyatt. His wife, Jasmine Holmquist, is a former UW-Superior student.

“It is with a very heavy heart that the UW-Superior community offers our sincere condolences to former UWS student Jasmine (Jones) Holmquist. Her husband, Sergeant Carson Holmquist of Grantsburg, WI, was one of the four Marines killed Thursday in Chattanooga, TN. Our love, thoughts, and prayers are with Jasmine, their 2-year-old son Wyatt, and the families of all four of the fallen American heroes,” wrote UW-Superior’s facebook page.

Governor Scott Walker signed an executive order Friday to have flags across the state at half mass in honor of Holmquist.

“My heart goes out to the victims of the senseless act of violence”

“Tonette and I send our thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of all of those affected by this senseless act of violence,” Governor Walker said in a press release. “We honor the memory of Sergeant Carson Holmquist, and we will never forget the courage and sacrifice he displayed serving this great country.”

Senator Tammy Baldwin issued the statement “My heart goes out to the victims of the senseless act of violence in Chattanooga and their loved ones. I would especially like to extend my sympathies to the family and friends of Wisconsin native Marine Sergeant Carson Holmquist. His bravery and service to our nation will never be forgotten.”

The executive order declared Holmquist “provided faithful and honorable service to the people of the State of Wisconsin and people of the United States” and “it is appropriate for all of us to remember and honor those brave ad honorable soldiers.”

Flags across Superior will be at half mass as to remember our home-town soldier until the day after his funeral.

Abdulazeez was killed about thirty minutes after the incident. Many details are not confirmed as of the time of this story’s publishing.
