Dragons, Knights, and Princesses, Oh My!

By Nicky Wilson

Northern Lights Family Resource CenterLast week, the Family Resource Center of Superior, located inside Northern Lights Elementary, was transformed into a magical world of box castles. Children were able to make their own crowns and shields, then battle ferocious dragons. The children took turns coloring the castle and lifting the drawbridge, then sent all of the fierce dragons to the dungeon.

Story time centered on the castle theme as well, as parents and children joined together to sing Puff, the Magic Dragon. The children all agreed that Castle Week has been one of their favorite themes so far this year.

Each week, the Family Resource Center features a new theme for crafts, stories, and activities. Children learn through a variety of interactive stations. Getting Dressed featured a station to wash and hang clothes to dry, as well as stations with paper dolls and wooden bears needing help getting dressed.  Dinosaur Week was popular with the little ones as they were able to dig for dinosaurs with excavation tools and make dinosaur crafts.

Snow and Ice was exciting as snow was brought inside, where it was sprayed with colored water and transformed into a rainbow of colors. During Hibernation Week, children not only learned what hibernation is, but were also able to hunt for sleeping bears.

The Family Resource Center is fun for parents, too! Parents play and create with their children, and are able to separate from their children for a casual parenting class. This unique opportunity allows moms, dads, grandparents, and other caregivers to meet and talk with other adults who understand the challenges and joys in raising successful, happy children.

The Family Resource Center offers free classes for children 16 months to 5 years, as well as a weekly playgroup. We always welcome new faces and new friends to grow and explore with!
