Lake Superior Day, 3rd Sunday in July

The community is invited to celebrate Lake Superior Day on Sunday, July 19 at Barker’s Island Festival Park in Superior, Wis. Drop in for free family fun with live music, kids’ activities, the Blessing of the Fleet, local art, informational booths, and food vendors from 11:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., all focused on celebrating and appreciating our Great Lake.

Music performances start at 12:15 p.m. and will feature the acoustic folk and jazzy reggae of Grand Marais’ Michael Monroe, local party pop funk band Red Mountain, and the hand drumming and songs of the Oshkii Giizhik Singers.

Vendors and informational booths will open at 11:30 a.m., along with a tent just for kids.  This year will feature the first exhibit of Words for Water, a photography project that aims to capture the essence of what we value about Lake Superior and the land, streams, rivers and watersheds that feed it.

Lake Superior is the cleanest, coldest, and clearest of the Great Lakes. The largest lake by surface area in the world, it fuels our local shipping, commercial fishing, and recreational industries while providing a source for clean drinking water. Every day, each of the 600,000 human residents of the Lake Superior basin use water from the lake for drinking, home use, industrial use, or recreation. The lake is essential for countless fish, birds, animals, and plants.

Lake Superior Day was started in the early 1990s to highlight the importance of this great water body to the basin’s environment and economy. This year’s event is coordinated by the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve, a federal reserve encompassing over 16,000 acres along the St. Louis River freshwater estuary.   Lake Superior NERR is one of four research centers at UW-Superior.  Come enjoy the festivities in appreciation of our lake!
