The Pruitt Center for Mindfulness and Well-Being is located in Swenson Hall on the UW-Superior campus.

The University of Wisconsin-Superior Foundation announced that it has received an additional generous gift in support of the Pruitt Center for Mindfulness and Well- Being from its founders, Doug and Becky Pruitt.

In 2018, the Pruitt’s made the opening of the Pruitt Center at UW-Superior possible through a generous initial gift. Their ongoing support this year comes as part of the foundation’s “Together We Are Superior” $20 million fundraising campaign and ensures the continuation and expansion of the center’s programs and services.

“Words cannot express how profoundly grateful we are for Becky and Doug’s generosity and continued support of the Pruitt Center’s mission,” said Randy Barker, UWS director for health, counseling & well-being. “This gift will enable us to continue to serve and expand programs and services through the Pruitt Center for our campus and greater community.”

Since its opening in August 2018, the Pruitt Center has supported the mental health and well-being of thousands of UWS students, employees and the public through its on- and off-campus workshops, trainings, mindfulness course offerings, guest speakers, yoga sessions, and more. With the onset of the pandemic, these resources were all transitioned to online formats as the need for them increased.

“During these difficult and uncertain times, people are experiencing more stress, loneliness and anxiety, which negatively impacts their well-being,” said Barker. “From our perspective, this is the time, more than ever, that this work is vital and important.”

Doug and Becky Pruitt first brought the mindfulness and well-being research and concept to the attention of Chancellor Renée Wachter and Vice Chancellor for Advancement Jeanne Thompson in 2014. Becky, a 1965 alumna, has long been involved with mindfulness and well-being practices, serving on the advisory board for the Greater Good Science Center at UC-Berkeley and is involved with the Center for Mindfulness, Compassion and Resilience at ASU.

“We see UW-Superior as a gem in the Northland and we see no limit to the positive impact the Center can have on students, faculty and staff, the community and region,” said Becky Pruitt. “We have been extremely impressed with the leadership of the center and support their vision of it becoming a hub serving the entire university system and beyond.”
