SHS Students Raise Money for Pets
By Molly Bergum
Students from the Superior High School FBLA and DECA chapters hosted a Car Smash event recently that raised money for the Humane Society of Douglas County. The event took place on February 12th in the school parking lot.
In January, project leaders Lorena Wicklund, Megan Dembroski and Molly Bergum created an online survey for all students and staff at the high school to vote on which charity they wanted the money to be donated to. All charity contestants were local.
“I think it’s important to give to a local charity in order to instill a sense of community pride,” Dembroski said.
Over 300 people voted, and the Humane Society of Douglas County was chosen as the designated charity.
During Student Council’s schoolwide assembly on February 12, Dembroski, Wicklund and Bergum talked to the school and brought in a guest speaker and dog from the Humane Society.
The event took place after the assembly during lunch. Students could pay $1 for one hit or $3 for 5 hits. Superior Towing generously donated an old white Pontiac for the fundraiser. Students could hit the donated car with a wide range of tools including hammers, crowbars and sledgehammers.
“I believe the event was successful because we beat our goal and were able to bring our school together to make a difference in such a short amount of time” Dembroski said.
Within just the lunch hour, students spent a total of $177 dollars on destroying the car. In addition, Student Council donated $25. Wicklund, Dembroski and Bergum set an original goal to raise $50. The fundraiser yielded a total of $202 to help the Humane Society of Douglas County’s new facility pay for veterinarian care, utility bills and supplies.
