Soup Town Transformed into Funky Town
By Doug Dalager
Thanks to a Facebook invite that popped up on my screen yesterday afternoon, I was learned that my friends Rich Mowers and John Thorene would be appearing at the Keyport last night from 6 pm until 9 pm. A quick text message to my wife at her job confirmed what we would be doing that evening.
We got to the Keyport about twenty minutes after the music and found the music room already packed with fans of the jazz infused funk, R&B and occasionally gospel sounds that The Hounds throw down.
The band consists of veteran keyboardist Dave Winchester, Rich Mowers on sax, John Thorene on bass, Ron Koivisto on guitar, Rick Bruner on drums, all of whom are long-time fixtures on the Twin Ports music scene.
This is a brief video I shot using my cell phone, so please excuse the poor sound quality. I only present it here to demonstrate that good music can be found in Superior, and that if you keep your ears open (and your Facebook online) you can find a fun night out. For my money, these fellows are as good of musicians as you’ll find anywhere.
The Hounds will appear at the Keyport again on Thursday, November 17th….did I mention that 22 oz draft Miller Lites were only $2.00! Check them out again at the Keyport in three weeks, and if you see me there feel free to buy me a beer for the referral!
The Hounds Facebook page can be found HERE. Toss them a “LIKE” and maybe they’ll send you an invite to future shows.
