Class of 2014-2015 Projects Hope to Improve Superior
Established in 1991, the Leadership Superior/Douglas County Program is an annual program for approximately 25-30 emerging and existing leaders who want to be involved in improving the community and shaping its future. Participants represent a cross-section of the urban and rural communities of Douglas County and have diverse backgrounds and interests.
The program:
- Identifies and cultivates current and future leaders
- Offers a two day retreat and all-day monthly meetings on a variety of topics
- Heightens community awareness and deepens involvement of local citizens
- Offers an opportunity for new citizen networks to develop and help to shape the future of our community
At the Elk’s Club on Belknap Avenue today, the Leadership Class of 2014-2015 presented their group projects. This year’s class class broke into several groups and chose projects that they felt would be beneficial to Superior and would fill needs of local residents. The projects chosen by this year’s groups include:
- Children’s Memorial Garden – To create a garden of hope, healing and peace for families and friends that have experienced the tragic loss of a child. The proposed Children’s Memorial Park will celebrate the lives of these beautiful children, honor the love of their family and friends, and establish a peaceful sanctuary for all. Group members: Katelyn Baumann, Cary Breitlow, Mike Johnston, Stacey Minter.
- Continued development & promotion of Explore Superior – Energize and promote Explore Superior to increase Superior & Douglas County’s virtual presence, promoting tourism while supplementing communication within the community. Group members: Mark Sisson, Ann Hoffman, Wendy Running, Nicole Teasley, and Tracy TePoel.
- Elderly Outreach – Enriching the lives of Seniors through Youth Interaction. Create a partnership with our community youth programs. Through these partnerships the leadership group hopes to provide structured visits to local nursing homes where children can interact with seniors through reading, playing board games, and card games. Group members: Jasmin Burt, Alayna Burger, Michael Jaszczak, Jacie Maslowski, and Erik Sutton.
- Tribute Tree Program – Promote the City of Superior’s, “Tribute Tree Program” and help control the spread of Emerald Ash Borer by educating the community and seeking replacement tree sponsorship from community organizations and individuals. Group members: Stacie Buchanan, Tedd Ells, Nick Nelson, Ellen Oaks, Brett Brodeen.
- Fantastic Five for Four Corners – The Four Corners Elementary School athletic field is in need of “cleanup and fix up”. The leadership group will organize a community effort to vastly improve the field’s condition and put together a plan for sustainability. Group members: Linda Cadotte, Steve Kimmes, Kim Kowalik, Mike Ryan, and Jessica Huset.
