For those doubting the benefits of the Ice Project on Barker’s Island, consider this. According to Brittany Berrens, Director of Marketing at the Superior-Douglas County Chamber of Commerce, the Ice Project has garnered widespread coverage far and beyond the borders of Douglas County.

The Chamber is keeping a running list of the news coverage about the Lake Superior Ice Project, and at last count the list totaled 128 different news stories in online publications as varied as the New York Times, Washington Times, Minneapolis Star Tribune, WPR, MPR, Smithsonian Magazine, USAToday, and the DailyMail-UK (yes, United Kingdom!) There are far more stories about our Ice Project floating out there in digital land, but this is a pretty good representation for starters. On top of that, the story of the Ice Project collapsing has been an ongoing topic of interest on radio and television stations, and newspapers all over the midwest, including in the Duluth/Superior market.

Explore Superior is happy to post Berrens’ link to all of these articles, all you need to do is click HERE and you can scan the rather impressive list of news and views about our ill-fated, but much talked about Ice Project. Ironically, it seems that the collapse of the Ice Project has generated far more coverage than we had hoped for had it simply stayed upright!

Now that Roger “Iceman” Hanson is hard at work attempting to make lemonade from lemons, let’s all support him in his efforts to create something beautiful in time for the February 28th sound and fireworks show that will be mounted thanks to the sponsorship of our hometown bank, National Bank of Commerce.

Thanks again to the Mayor’s office and the Chamber for their support and leadership in bringing this vision to life. Also, a huge thank you to Roger for not throwing in the towel at a time that many others might have given up.

If you are excited by this project, please share your praise with the Mayor & the Chamber, (tell them Explore Superior sent you) we’re confident they hear enough negative, so a digital pat on the back would no doubt be appreciated!)
