Elementary Students Taught How To Respect Our Flag
By Robyn Deshayes
Northern Lights Elementary School honored veterans on a Veteran’s Day ceremony at the school on Wednesday, 11/11/2015. The day began with a read-aloud by the principal about the memorial White Table to honor soldiers who are MIA and POWs.
Mr. O’Connell’s class adopted the White Table this Veteran’s Day and set one up in our cafeteria and in their classroom.
The American Legion visited 4th grade classrooms and taught students how to properly fold and carry the flag. The American Legions members then held a flag raising ceremony on the front lawn of the school for all students and staff.
Students were so respectful of the ceremony. There wasn’t a sound made as the flag was raised. We were very fortunate to have these courageous men and women at Northern Lights representing all veterans.
Veterans were also welcomed to enjoy lunch free of charge that day with the students of Northern Lights.
Veterans – Thank you for your service and preserving our freedoms.
Editor’s Note: We apologize for not publishing this article the week of Veteran’s Day. Unfortunately the draft of this post was overlooked at the time. In spite of the belated nature of the story, we felt the actions of our children in honoring local veterans deserved to be publicized rather than left on the shelf. Please accept our apologies for our oversight.
